In May, Babel Academy of English in Dublin welcomed two staff members from the University of Insubria’s International Relations Office in Italy: Rebecca and Lucia. Both took part in an Erasmus+ staff mobility program, joining the Communication & Culture course.
For them, this was more than professional training—it was their first Erasmus+ adventure abroad, a milestone that blended personal growth, language learning, and cultural discovery.
A Warm Welcome and a New Challenge
For Rebecca, who works in orientation and placement at her university’s International Office, the experience was both exciting and new:
“This is my first experience in a foreign country to improve my English. Everything is new and surprising. But the environment here is very warm and welcoming. Everyone is so kind.”
She found the course well-suited to her level:
“I understand the teacher very well, even if I have some difficulties speaking.”
Beyond classroom learning, Rebecca enjoyed the cultural activities offered through Babel Academy, from a visit to the Archaeological Museum to a weekend trip to Belfast.
Building Language Confidence for International Work
For Lucia, whose role in the International Office involves daily interaction with Erasmus and international students, improving her English was a professional priority.
“One of the most important things I’ve gained here is improving my conversation skills. This will help me so much in my daily work.”
Her expectations were clear: to meet colleagues from other countries, explore Dublin for the first time, and immerse herself in Irish culture. The experience delivered on all counts:
“I got to know a lot of new people, and the lessons really encouraged interaction.”
Lucia and Rebecca chose Babel Academy based on strong recommendations from colleagues who had previously attended Erasmus+ courses there.
“They were very happy with their experience, so we decided to try it too.”
A Recommendation from the Heart
When asked if they would recommend Erasmus+ staff mobility in Ireland, both answered without hesitation.
“Absolutely. I would recommend this to all my colleagues, and really to anyone who wants to improve their English in a great environment,” said Lucia.
For International Office staff in particular, the chance to practice English in real contexts while building global networks is invaluable.
At the end of their Erasmus+ week in Babel Academy of English, Rebecca, Lucia and their colleagues, returned to Italy with improved English skills tailored to their professional needs; confidence for daily communication with international students, cultural insights and international friendships that extend beyond the classroom.
